Homework:
All 2nd graders should be reading at LEAST 15 minutes every night, Sunday through Monday, with either English OR Spanish books. Your CHILD is to complete the reading graph with their name, minutes read per night and then a total at the bottom. Anything less than 105 minutes/week will be made up during their recess times. IF your child looses their reading log it is THEIR responsibility to write the minutes on another sheet of paper. You may also simply click here to download and print the log.
Not all students strengths are the same, so why should their homework be the same? Homework this year will be assigned based on meaning. Homework will not be assigned for the sole reason of keeping your child busy, but rather will be assigned when the homework is meaningful and beneficial to your student. Homework will be determined based on classroom work. If after a particular lesson your child appears to need a bit more practice, I will assign homework that allows for this additional practice. Because the assignment of homework will be done on more of an individual basis, this could mean that not all students are receiving the same assignments, or that some students might have an assignment while others might not.
You can continue to help your second grader be responsible by helping them to remember to complete their homework each night. I realize other commitments arise and that it is not always possible to complete the homework. HOWEVER, if homework is NOT completed, and after examining the circumstance on an individual basis, there may be a consequence. I, along with the 2nd grade curriculum, am trying to instill a sense of responsibility that will help them in their future study habits as curriculum demands strengthen the older they get.
Additionally, it is your student's responsibility to keep track of their homework folder and ALL of its contents. Based on past experiences and practices, I strongly urge your child to find a special place they can call "theirs" to help them realize that anything placed in this space is school related and needs to be completed and brought back to school. This will also assist them in locating their backpack every morning and allow them to keep track of their studies.
